Every two years Disney pulls out all the stop at the D23 Expo in Anaheim, California with new merchandise, fan experiences, and—most relevant to the crowd who can’t make it out to enjoy the event first-hand—big announcements. On Saturday morning Disney chiefs Alan Horn, and Disney Pictures’ Sean Bailey took the stage to tease upcoming films from the Disney stable including the first footage for
Ava DuVernay’s A Wrinkle in Time.
Joining DuVernay on stage were members of the cast: Mrs. Whatsit (Reese Witherspoon), Mrs. Who (Mindy Kaling) Mrs. Which (Oprah Winfrey), Meg Murray (Storm Reid), and Mr. Murray (Chris Pine) who debuted the first teaser for the film.
The footage opens with a voice-over from Pine’s scientist character who has discovered, well, a wrinkle in time. “What if we are here for a reason?” He asks as footage of Meg living an ordinary girl’s life flash by. “What if we are part of something truly divine? Imagine 91 billion light years traveled”—Pine snaps—“like that.”
The footage then gets fantastical with Oprah’s character taking over the narration as a cover “Sweet Dreams” plays. “Your father has accomplished something extraordinary but also dangerous. He’s trapped by a darkness that’s actively spreading throughout the universe. The only one who can stop it is you. Be a warrior,” she tells Meg as scenes involving Kaling, Witherspoon, and Winfrey in countless fantastical wigs and Michael Peña in a candy-colored suit and outlandish mustache flash by. “I’ll try,” Meg answers.
As Meg sets off on her adventures which includes a stop in a disturbing dystopian suburban cul-de-sac overseen by Scandal’s Bellamy Young, Winfrey cautions: “You’re going to be tested every step of the way. Trust nothing.” The trailer concludes with the uplifting: “The only thing faster than light is the darkness.”
DuVernay called the film “a family story wrapped in an epic adventure.” A Wrinkle in Time will premiere in March 2018.
