Vogue magazine has issued an apology for its flippant use and misappropriation of the term “gender fluidity” on its latest cover starring model Gigi Hadid and pop artist Zayn Malik.

Many readers were outraged over the publication’s misuse of the non-binary and gender fluid labels, which, according to the Human Rights Campaign, denotes “a person who does not identify with a single fixed gender, or expresses a fluid or unfixed gender identity.”

After a wave of backlash, Vogue issued an apology on Friday (July 14), releasing a statement that reads, “The story was intended to highlight the impact the gender-fluid, non-binary communities have had on fashion and culture. We are very sorry the story did not correctly reflect that spirit – we missed the mark.”

“We do look forward to continuing the conversation with greater sensitivity,” the magazine continued.

In an August 2017 interview story titled, “Gigi Hadid and Zayn Malik Are Part of a New Generation Embracing Gender Fluidity,” Hadid and Malik talk about borrowing each other’s clothes.

“I shop in your closet all the time, don’t I?” Hadid says in the article.

“Yeah, but same. What was that T-shirt I borrowed the other day?” Malik replies.

“The Anna Sui?” Hadid asks, Malik responding, “Yeah. I like that shirt. And if it’s tight on me, so what? It doesn’t matter if it was made for a girl.”

“Totally. It’s not about gender. It’s about, like, shapes. And what feels good on you that day. And anyway, it’s fun to experiment,” the model adds.
