SERIES HISTORY: Cal leads 40-37-2. The Bears won 52-49 in overtime last season to snap a seven-game losing streak in the series. Cal has not won in Eugene since 2007.
STORYLINES: Both teams will try to bounce back after losing for the first time last week under first-year coaches. Justin Wilcox’s Bears lost 30-20 to No. 5 USC and the Ducks under Willie Taggart lost 37-35 at Arizona State … This is a homecoming for Wilcox, an Oregon alum, and two of his assistant coaches who previously worked for the Ducks … Cal’s rejuvenated defense (24.0 points per game allowed) will be tested by an Oregon offense that leads the nation in scoring (50.8). The Bears have not allowed more than 30 points in a game and Oregon has not scored fewer than 35 … Key for the Bears will be to continue generating turnovers (11) but cut down on their own giveaways (6 vs. USC) … No word on whether Cal WR Demetris Robertson will return after missing the past two games with an undisclosed injury.
STATS THAT MATTER: A Cal pass defense that ranks 123rd nationally (309.5 yards/game) faces Oregon sophomore QB Justin Herbert, who has eclipsed the 3,000-yard passing mark in 13 career games … The Bears have dropped eight straight conference road games since beating Washington 30-24 on Sept. 26, 2015 … Cal senior LB Devante Downs leads the Pac-12 and is tied for fourth nationally with 11.5 tackles per game … Oregon RB Royce Freeman, who has rushed for 4,687 yards and has 25 career games of at least 100 yards, managed just 10 yards on 15 carries vs. Cal a year ago.
