Both Witherspoon and Kidman are nominated in the Outstanding Lead Actress in a Limited Series or Movie category. Their competition includes FEUD: Bette And Joan stars Jessica Lange and Susan Sarandon, American Crime actress Felicity Huffman, and Fargo‘s Carrie Coon.
Because Big Little Lies premiered in February, neither Kidman nor Witherspoon was nominated at January’s Golden Globes or SAG Awards. In fact, Huffman is the only 2017 Emmy nominee in this category who was also nominated at the Globes and SAG Awards, though she lost both times to Sarah Paulson in The People v OJ Simpson.
Both Witherspoon and Kidman have earned rave reviews for their roles in the HBO miniseries. Witherspoon appeared born to play the cheating, outspoken Madeline. And some have called Kidman’s work as abused wife Celeste the best of her career.
“Where Witherspoon’s tart-tongued performance operates in juxtaposition to the actress’ America’s-sweetheart reputation, Kidman is more of a blank canvas,” wrote Huffington Post columnist Matthew Jacobs. “Whatever half-baked estimations have been bestowed upon her career over the years, the varied roles Kidman has chosen complement the excellence of “Big Little Lies”: She is pliable and unpredictable.”
But experts believe that Kidman is the favorite to win the Emmy for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Limited Series. Nineteen of the 22 experts on GoldDerby.com predict she will take home the trophy, with two votes going to Lange, and one to Sarandon. The site gives Kidman ¼ odds for a victory, compared to 9/1 odds for Lange, the second favorite. Witherspoon, meanwhile, is a 66/1 long shot.
Still, this category is so stacked that anything could happen. And some are pulling for Witherspoon to pull off the upset win.
“Kidman is magical, so there’s not a lot to fight,” wrote Variety‘s Sonia Saraiya. “Those therapy scenes alone are just shattering. But this all being said, allow me to express my sincerest admiration for her co-star, Reese Witherspoon, who I think takes on a trickier and more socially reviled role: The aggressive, performatively parenting stay-at-home mom.”
But no matter who wins, Kidman and Witherspoon may both have something to celebrate at Sunday’s Emmys. Big Little Lies is the favorite to take home the Best Miniseries Award. And both Kidman and Witherspoon were producers on the series.
