After Michelle Rounds, Rosie O’Donnell‘s ex wife, died of an apparent suicide fans are wondering if Rounds was struggling with depression during their marriage.
TMZ reports that Rounds was found dead in her home on Monday. She was just 46 years old. According to her online obituary, she is survived by her grandmother, both parents, her wife Krista Monteleone, her brother, two daughters, and a stepson.
Before marrying Monteleone, Rounds was in a relationship with O’Donnell for several years. They first started dating in 2011 and wed a year later. They even adopted a daughter together in 2013. But the marriage quickly turned south, and they separated in late 2014. O’Donnell announced the news the following year, and the contentious split was finalized in 2016.
After news broke of Rounds’ death, O’Donnell paid tribute to her ex in a statement. She also claimed that Rounds had been battling mental illness.
“I am saddened to hear about this terrible tragedy,” O’Donnell said. “Mental illness is a very serious issue affecting many families. My thoughts and prayers go out to Michelle’s family, her wife and their child.” O’Donnell similarly tweeted several messages about mental illnesses late Friday evening.

Despite O’Donnell’s statement, Rounds never confirmed whether she was battling depression or another mental illness. And local police are still not ruling her death a suicide.
“They are not calling this a suicide at this time,” a spokesperson for the Orange County (Florida) Sheriff’s Department told ETOnline. “They are calling it a death investigation. We are waiting for the autopsy to come back.”
Still, Rounds’ mom seemingly confirmed that the former consultant committed suicide. Gayla Rounds reportedly wrote on social media after her daughter’s death, “If anyone would like to give to the National Suicide Prevention it would also be greatly appreciated. There are so many out there in this world that have demons that they think suicide is the only way out.”
In fact, Michelle Rounds may have had depression for several years before her death. Back in 2015, when Rounds and O’Donnell were in a nasty custody battle over Dakota, Rounds was hospitalized after reportedly overdosing on pills. TMZ reported that Rounds had threatened suicide before taking the medication and that O’Donnell had called 911 to save her estranged wife’s life.
However, other insiders insisted at the time that Rounds did not attempt suicide. Instead, a source told ET, “She had a reaction to medication she was taking both for stress and for her condition [of desmoid tumors]. It was simply a bad reaction. If she was trying to commit suicide, they would have held her at the hospital.”
