How Kate Middleton’s “George” Necklace Is a Tribute to Princess Diana

When it comes to royal clothing items, jewelry, and gifts, there is almost always some kind of secret backstory. You’ll see Prince George wearing a certain pair of fancy shoes and then find out that William and Charles both wore that very same pair of fancy shoes for that exact same occasion precisely two decades apart (we’re exaggerating, but it always seems to be something close to that). Almost everything has been put in place or arranged for a particular reason.

So it shouldn’t come as much of a surprise that it’s recently been explained that a gift Pippa Middleton gave to her sister, Kate, when her son, George, was born in 2013, had a particularly special resonance. At the time, Pippa gifted her sister with a Merci Maman necklace, comprised of a small gold disc (the name “George Alexander Louis” inscribed on it), a small gold heart (with a “W” for “William” engraved on it), and then a small charm shaped like a boy.

A sweet, creative gift, and also one with some history to it, as it turns out that Princess Diana wore a very similar necklace, given to her by Prince Charles. Diana’s necklace involved a gold disc, as well (though hers had the word “William” written on it).

In a blog post about the necklace, Merci Maman explained, “Upon the birth of Prince William in 1982, Prince Charles gave Diana the gift of a gold pendant engraved their new son’s name, which she always wore close to her heart. In 2013, Pippa Middleton continued this family tradition by giving her sister Kate, The Duchess of Cambridge, our Personalized Duchess Necklace to celebrate the birth of Prince George.”

And—get ready for this—for about $102, you can order your, yes, very own personalized gold necklace, of the same kind. The necklace may set you back a sizable amount of money, but the feeling you’ll get when you catch a glimpse of yourself wearing it in the mirror, and, just for a moment, imagine yourself coming down a giant stairwell in Buckingham Palace for some kind of royal occasion wearing it, will be, as they say, priceless.
