Though the strategic stakes of this week’s Game of Thrones battle en flambé were relatively low—as pointed out by our own Joanna Robinson, all the captured gold was already safely through the gates of King’s Landing, which meant Daenerys didn’t torch much more than some rando footsoldiers. But the emotional stakes of the battle will last much longer, as evidenced by these new images of Season 7’s upcoming fifth episode, titled “Eastwatch.“ Tyrion Lannister kept a safe distance as he watched Drogon destroy the army bearing his family sigil, and his own brother Jaime face mortal peril. But in the next episode, he’ll get close to the destruction—and he doesn’t seem thrilled about it.
The rest of these newly-released images, as is the wont of the highly secretive show, mostly show characters in places we’ve seen them before: Varys and Tyrion looking stern at Dragonstone; Daenerys and Jon Snow looking even sterner at Dragonstone; Cersei looking downright miserable in her gilded bedroom. But we can at least also look forward to the return of Sam and Gilly at Oldtown, poring over more papers that, like Sam’s discovery of the dragonglass under Daenerys’s castle, might hold the key to saving the realm.
The title of the episode almost certainly refers to something not seen in these images, but referenced in the preview that aired on Sunday: the arrival of White Walkers at the far-northern port of Eastwatch. The last time we saw the White Walkers tussle with humans on a massive scale, it resulted in the unforgettable episode “Hardhome.“’ Could something equally as exciting, and maybe even able to top the Lannister vs. dragons battle, be on its way? Just four more days left to find out.
