ALAMEDA — Raiders coach Jack Del Rio took note Wednesday of the progress of Denver quarterback Trevor Siemian.
“I think Trevor is doing a great job developing as young player at that position,” Del Rio said. “He looks more confident to me, more certain in his reads. They’re running the ball well, which always helps the quarterback. He’s accurate, smart. He looks like he’s in command of his offense.”
Siemian, a 14-game starter in a non-playoff season a year ago, was the surprise winner in a competition with Paxton Lynch, a first-round draft pick in 2016.
Broncos first-year coach Vance Joseph, a defensive coach by trade, left his offense in the hands of former Broncos coordinator Mike McCoy and quarterbacks coach Bill Musgrave.
Yes, the same Musgrave who was allowed to walk by Del Rio after his contract expired for fear of losing Todd Downing, who was elevated from quarterbacks coach to offensive coordinator for the Raiders
Joseph sees Musgrave’s even and deliberate approach as being good for both Siemian And Lynch
“He is the perfect personality to raise young quarterbacks,” Joseph said in a conference call. “He’s so patient. He’s easy to talk to, he’s easy to trust. For a young quarterback, he’s a dream and he’s obviously an experienced football coach. He’s been great for Mike and Mike’s been great for him to allow Billy to put his fingerprints on our offense also . . . It’s a hell of a staff. We don’t have any egos. Everyone shares their beliefs and their knowledge, and everyone is heard.”
Downing, whose offense operated smoothly and efficiently in Weeks 1 and 2, will be looking to iron out mistakes this week. Much of the system remains intact from Musgrave, with Downing having made his tweaks and turning the offense over to a greater extent to quarterback Derek Carr.
Joseph downplayed the possibility of Musgrave being able to provide inside information on the Raiders offense.
“In my opinion, it’s overrated,” Joseph said. “What we do is watch the tape and game plan what we see on tape. Every team changes and when you watch the offense from last year to this year, it’s not the same thing that Billy installed there.
“As far as the quarterback, we know the kind of player he is and what kind of person he is, just being in our division. It’s not much he can share that we didn’t already know about Carr.
