August is the hottest month of the year, which also means it’s the best month for beer lovers. Luckily, there are great beers up and down the state of California. And recently a lot of the best ones were acknowledged and honored.
The California State Fair recently announced the winners of its commercial beer competition, choosing the best among over 1,500 beer entries. The state competition was taken over around five years ago by the Northern California Brewers Guild, and is now America’s third largest beer competition, after the Great American Beer Festival and the World Beer Cup.
Last month in Sacramento there was an award ceremony to present 126 awards in 42 separate categories, plus the top three best of show and brewery of the year. A panel of judges tasted the best of show winners, by category, to arrive at the top three beers overall in California: Pilsnerish, a blonde ale from Flatland Brewing of Elk Grove, took first place; Wobblor, a doppelbock from Crooked Lane Brewing located in Auburn, took second place; and in third place was Apricot de Brettaville, from San Francisco’s Almanac Beer Co. Its original category? Wild Specialty Beer, a catch-all category that encompasses a number of different, related beer styles.
This year’s brewery of the year was a newcomer, Loma Brewing in Los Gatos, which opened a year ago. Former Red Sox baseball great Kevin Youkilis, who’d been living in Los Gatos, decided to open the brewery after his retirement from baseball in 2014. He and his brother, Scott, took over the former Los Gatos Brewing space, gutted it and made it their own, hiring Warren Billups as their brewmaster. Billups formerly brewed at Heretic Brewing and was involved with the Brewing Network, too, and it looks like he’s hit it out of the park with his beers in just one year, besting so many other great California breweries.
Other Bay Area breweries that took home gold medals include Magnolia, for New Speedway Bitter, and Santa Clara Valley Brewing for their New Almaden Imperial Red Ale. The full list of award winners can be found at the Cal State website (castatefair.org/2017-california-commercial-beer-results).
New Richmond Brewery
A new brewery opened in Richmond last week, Armistice Brewing (armisticebrewing.com), which held its grand opening Aug. 4. Founded by a brother and sister team, Gregory and Alex Zobel, the Marina Bay neighborhood brewery is the third new brewery to open in Richmond in the last few years (joining Benoit Casper Brewing and East Brother Beer Co.). One of Armistice’s initial releases, Fistful of Flowers IPA, a Session IPA inspired by spaghetti westerns, is described as having “green papaya, tangerine and the delicate distillation of roses.” Until Armistice’s beer is more widely available, stop by the new taproom and see for yourself what’s brewing in Richmond these days.
