Brooklyn Beckham Is Settling into Art School Just Fine

Hollywood kids. There are so many of them. I’m not even talking about famous child actors. There are a lot of those, too. But children of the famous. The ones that grow up well-known from day one, before they have the muscle integrity to lift a finger. There are posts on People Babies to herald their blessed arrival. Strangers far and wide analyze their names. An adoring public double taps the Instagram of their first photo like proud aunties, wondering how the powerful genes of the parents might manifest themselves. Their life is on the record from their first breath. (Well, everyone’s life is on the record from their first breath. It’s just people seem to care about the famous tots, for better or for worse.)

It must be a frightening way to live. Maybe it’s an exciting one. Say you’re Brooklyn Beckham, for example. The eldest child of not one, but two internationally recognized faces and names, David Beckham, the fancy foot man and underwear impresario, and Victoria Beckham, one of five spices and business woman. Everyone wants to know What is he like? What does he do? What is he going to say?
What if what he says is . . . not great?
Well, now that he’s out in the world, a college freshman at Parsons and already a published photographer in his new book, What I See, he’s revealing a bit more to the world. What is he going to say?

Say something very slightly snobbish, it turns out. The eldest Beckham boy told The Cut’s Allie Jones that he’s settling in just fine at college, with limited interruptions from what he calls “fangirls.”

“I like people from school, but there are a few fangirls in the school,” he said. “Sometimes, I have to be like, ‘I’m going to be with you for like, four years, so chill.’” Chill, people! Chill!

“I mean, it’s gotten better,” he continued. “They understand and they respect it, but it’s just at the beginning, it’s such a shock to them, so it’s fine.” A shock!

Then he tried to distance himself from “those famous, annoying people,” saying they’re not the reason he came to New York. Annoying! People!

Listen, it might sound like he’s reading from the handbook for handsome sons of extremely famous people (a best seller!), but if you were a gorgeous 18-year-old attracting this kind of attention, what would you do? A college freshman has made it through a published interview without saying anything will make his mom shake her head; how many of us can claim that? He’s got four more years of Parsons and who knows how much more New York City socializing to do after that; if this is as awkward as his press gets, he’ll be even luckier than he already was.
