Niner Nation might be seeing some more “Sunshine” soon.
That’s the nickname picked up at Iowa by C.J. Beathard, a rookie quarterback who has been competing with Matt Barkley to be the 49ers’ backup.
Coach Kyle Shanhana told KNBR those two have split No. 2 reps at training camp and are “battling pretty hard” for the right to sit behind starter Brian Hoyer.
“We really felt C.J., coming into training camp, earned the right to compete for the 2 spot and that’s how we’ve been doing it so far,” Shanahan said Thursday on the Murph & Mac show “We’ve been rotating them at practice and those guys have been battling pretty hard.”
The two quarterbacks splitting time at No. 2 is new in training camp, as noted by Bay Area News Group beat writer Can Inman. The change came after Shanahan liked Beathard’s performance at Organized Team Activities.
“Matt Barkley got the 2s (reps) throughout OTAs but C.J. did a good job with his 3 reps,” Shanhan said. “When we got our time off and got to get away a little bit, you come back and just try to study all your OTAs practices and mini-camp we had and you start to evaluate those guys.”
Their view seems similar to that of eighth-year guard Zane Beadles, who complimented Beathard on Wednesday.
“I’ve been with rookies who are wide-eyed and you can definitely tell that they’re not comfortable being in command. And I’ve been with rookies who come in and, with the way that they carry themselves in the huddle, you’d think they were an eight-year vet,” Beadles told Inman. “I think C.J. has been great in the little bit I’ve been able to play with him. He has a calm demeanor about him and is somebody out there to work hard and get better.”
