Do you know the origins of National Ice Cream Day? It actually got its official start in 1984. That’s when then-President Ronald Reagan declared July as National Ice Cream Month and then eventually National Ice Cream Day was designated. Reagan praised ice cream as “a nutritious and wholesome food.” Interesting that the jelly bean-loving president is the one who gave ice cream its own food holiday.
Fast forward a few decades, and National Ice Cream Day has grown more popular—especially as a way for restaurants and retailers to get customers through the door. They usually do this by offering some sort of freebie or deal on ice cream.
I first covered National Ice Cream Day in 2015. In that article I wrote about six deals for this food holiday. The next year, for National Ice Cream Day 2016, the number of deals went up to nine mouthwatering options, which I also covered.
Now it’s time for National Ice Cream Day 2017, and there are more opportunities than ever to indulge in ice cream. I’ve uncovered 11 brands offering ice cream deals for free or really cheap ice cream on National Ice Cream Day on Sunday, July 16—or should I say Sundae, July 16.
Obsessed with food holidays? Check out this month-by-month listing.
To get the details of each of these 11 offers, launch the slideshow gallery. Note: offers are listed in alphabetical order. Unless noted otherwise the deals are good for Sunday, July 16 or National Ice Cream Day only.
