Paris Hilton knows her way around fashion week. The 36-year-old has been coming to New York Fashion Week since before her Simple Life days, and now, it’s “like a high school reunion,” she said at Jamie Mizrahi’s Juicy Couture presentation on Wednesday, just hours before she hosted the brand’s after-party with a DJ set at the Chrystie Street Hotel.
Fashion week for Hilton used to be more of a family affair. Until about ten years ago, Diane von Furstenberg sent the Hilton sisters matching outfits to sport at events throughout the week. Nicky Hilton, now 33 and a fashion designer who lives in New York with her husband and baby daughter, grew out of it, but Paris said she would still welcome the tradition, if given the chance.
“Diane von Furstenberg would always send us two of each look, same print same style,” she said. “Then we started changing up and doing same style, different print. But we don’t do it anymore. I would still do it, but Nicky grew up.”
She joked that maybe she’d “trick” her sister into an identical outfit at a future fashion week, but, for now, she’s content with bringing her chihuahua Diamond Baby as her aesthetically pleasing sidekick to events. She noted that this was Diamond Baby’s first Juicy event, following in the footsteps of the late Tinkerbell, who was always a regular attendee at the velour-laden parties.
It may have been a long time since a DVF-clad Hilton ruled Fashion Week, or for that matter, since a hot pink velour Juicy Couture tracksuit was the fashion statement for a generation. But Hilton still knows how to draw a crowd; her Wednesday night D.J. set was met with a mob of people vying to get in the door, with actress Teyana Taylor even among those trapped outside.
If it’s early-00s nostalgia that brings everybody there, Hilton knows it, and doesn’t mind playing to it.
“The boys from Galore wanted early 2000s,” Hilton said of the set earlier in the day. “So, it’s gonna be Madonna, Lil Kim, Neo, Nas, Ja Rule, Janet Jackson, Prince. Old school music but mixing in a little bit of dance because I love electropop.”
The 00s are dead. Long live the 00s—and their queen.
